Sustainability

Green Touring

HOW LIVE & LOCAL IS TAKING STEPS TO BECOME A GREENER ORGANISATION

While we know Rural and Community Touring is one of the greenest performing arts sectors there is, the logistics behind running a scheme that covers 250+ village halls across eight counties in the Midlands require energy, power, personnel, buildings, transport and more.

This is why we have been taking steps to become a greener organisation now and for the future.

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE

It’s no secret that arts organisations love to shout about their exciting shows on shiny posters, flyers and brochures ahead of events. To often is the case that these are over-printed, and boxes of paper are left to be recycled or thrown away.

Since 2021:

  • We have gone ticket-less

    Initially a COVID-19 safety measure as much as a sustainability one, an increase in online ticketing shows an ever decreasing need for reams of paper tickets.

  • We have started producing posters and flyers on a case-by-case basis in house, on FSC-certified paper.

    That means less waste, less storage space, less postage, and a guarantee that any waste we do create can be reused or recycled – no coated paper in sight!

  • We are reconsidering how we manage and produce brochures

    As part of our annual review of printed publicity materials requested from artists and requested by promoters, we are also looking into our brochures and how we can reduce waste.
  • We are continuing to reduce paper usage in the office (and home offices)

    By only printing out the things we need to print out, there are no more cluttered desks and overflowing waste paper bins, and we are using less ink and energy to print. We also use digital communication instead of paper where possible.

  • We are continuing to recycle printer/ photocopier toner cartridges

CLEANER AIR

For years we’ve had remote employees working from home. All of office staff now combine office and home working, meaning less travel, fewer cars on the road and happier employees!

PROMOTING GOOD PRACTICE

With 250+ venues run by a network of promoters, we have little control over the sustainability measures of each. We can, however promote environmental good practice with our volunteer promoters, staff, suppliers and audiences.

We:

  • include ‘Recycle Me’ and ‘Take a Photo’ logos on all posters and flyers;
  • will continue to host meetings online where possible, and encourage our team to keep things on the screen rather than printing if they can;
  • encourage audiences to attend Live & Local events as the sustainable alternative to travelling into towns; and
  • promote the benefits of rural touring to our networks.
