International Women's Day 2023

Equality

In celebration of International Women’s Day on Wednesday 8th March 2023, we talk to talented pianist and singer-songwriter Daisy Chapman all about her experience as a female artist on the touring scheme and how we can embrace equality in the arts…

What do you think are some steps we can take to make the performing arts industry more equitable?

I think the acoustic genre is more welcoming to women than rock (I perform as part of both). The assumption that every rock band is made up of men and only has room for a female front person needs to be quashed.

I'd love to see more girls behind drum kits and mixing desks.

How can we better celebrate women’s achievements in the arts?

I would love to see more females being represented in the music tech side of the industry - producing, sound, mixing. Women are massively under represented in these areas but there are plenty out there who need to be recognised and celebrated so other young women feel they can follow suit.

How has rural touring forged your visibility as a female artist?

I feel rural touring has supported me and my music, regardless of my gender. It has meant I've been able to perform in corners of the country that aren't often saturated with live music and I appreciate that, as do the audiences.

What are some of the challenges of being a female artist in rural touring?

In touring in general, across the globe, especially when touring with men, it's always assumed by an outsider that I have an admin role - merch or manager. The thought that I'm a musician always comes second.

'I stand with other women who make art as it is a blessed line of work to be in, whoever you are.'

What are the positive aspects of being a female artist in rural touring?

The positives of being a female artist in rural touring are the same positives of being a female in life. It doesn't make me a better performer than a man, and doesn't give me more opportunities as I believe we should be treated equally, but I stand with other women who make art as it is a blessed line of work to be in, whoever you are.
